Spring has sprung? March 20, 2007

Filed under: blooming beautiful — reccyranger @ 12:03 pm

Over the last two weeks the daffodils have opened, and all around Shrewsbury there are swathes of golden daffodils. The town looks lovely as we drive around. It makes you feel so much better seeing these flowers in all their glory brightening up our days. It’s a pity that the weather is so awful at the moment but there could be some truth in the old adage, If March comes in like a lamb it will go out like a lion. It came as a shock looking out my window on Sunday to see snow flurries falling, and then having to drive back from Scotland I certainly encountered all weather, rain, sleet, hail, snow and high winds. Still I got back in one piece although tired from the journey.

Back to the flowers around town. The azaleas on the Crowmere Road Roundabout are just about out, I hope this cold weather doesn’t kill them off. I think this is my favourite roundabout in the spring. Frankwell Roundabout looks good with all the spring flowers out and I’m sure the bubble wrap will be coming off the tree ferns very shortly. They always remind me of my time in Melbourne where they grew wild in the Dandenongs.

I’ll try and remember to take some photos when I’m out and about and post to the site. Do you have a favourite roundabout? Let me know. Look forward to your comments

Busy programme March 7, 2007

Filed under: After school clubs — reccyranger @ 4:48 pm

The team are now visting five schools on a weekly basis and our numbers are increasing every week. We provide after school activities which include sporty games such as hockey, dodge ball  and cricket. There are circle games, kite flying and sometimes painting and drawing. It’s a pleasure to work with so many children around the borough and see how happy and well behaved they are. Through the play sessions we teach the children how to take turns when playing games and the importance of sharing and caring for each other as well as giving them opportunities to take part and have fun.

Sometimes to onlookers it seems like organised chaos however the children are taking part in activities that they would not normally do and they are having fun and learning through their experiences in a safe and supervised environment.

When out and about we encourage the children to take part in litter picks in their recreation areas and encourage them to take pride in their play areas.

Upton Lane Recreation Area February 26, 2007

Filed under: Upton Lane — reccyranger @ 9:19 am

Friday’s clean up of the BMX track at Upton Lane went really well. My thanks for the team of RAF trainees from RAF Shawbury (not Cosford) for coming along and helping with the clean-up. They explained that on Thursday they had taken their first solo flight and so had Friday off from flying and like trainees before them take part in a community activity project. My thanks also to the three SABC workers who strimmed and cut down the overgrown weeds. I know you were’nt to happy but at the end of the day you saw how much better the area looked and before we had finished heard appreciative comments for local residents. The team managed to fill a long loading skip with tree branches, kitchen units, bricks and much more. The area at the beginning of the clean up looked an overgrown mess, hard to tell it was a BMX track and by the afternoon you could see the full track and all corners of the site, no hiding places there for a while anyway. Before we left there were a couple of young lads came along and tried out the track. They thanked everyone for making the track safer for them and as a group of hoodies passed they were heard to say “Cool, that looks well better”.

It does look better but we need to look after it and invest in regular maintenance. If it is maintained I’m sure it would cut down on the anti-social behaviour and drug dealing that happens here when it’s overgrown.

Another problem that not only happens in Upton Lane but in all our recreation areas is dog fouling. THIS IS  BIG. I know that dogs need exercise and that when you arrive at the recs the dogs are let off to run around and there are responsible dog owners who clear up after their dogs but there is an awfully lot of people who don’t. Dog muck at Upton Lane is bad. What can we do about it? Should there be someone there monitoring? Should we be fining dog owners who allow their dogs to foul the football pitch/ bmx track/ play area and do not clean up? What do you think. What do you do with the bags of dog muck after cleaning up? Some people deposit the dog muck in the litter bins. I know there’s no where else to leave it, but the bins are situated either next to or inside the children’s play areas and the bins are sometimes only emptied once a week so as you can imagine they are not very pleasant. Also some teenagers seem to take pleasure in chucking these bags of excretement around for fun. So if you can take your dog bags home with you, it is better for everyone. I know it’s not nice carrying it and you just want to get rid of it as quickly as possible.

I finish by asking you the next time you are at a rec with your dog spare a thought for the children in the play areas or the football teams playing on the pitch, or our the kids on their BMX track.

I’ll stop now but comments on any of the above would be welcomed.

Upton Lane BMX Track February 21, 2007

Great to see people reading the blog. Last week we were out and about in Shrewsbury and had 100 young people come along to the sessions. At Kynaston Road we spent 2 hour in the cold playing football, basketball and hockey. While Stephanie and jeremy were taking the session I spent my time sweeping up the glass from the multi sports court. It was really bad but hopefully when we go back next week it should not take so long to do. There is still a panel missing from the court and hopefully this will be fixed soon. On Friday 23 February 2007  10 -3pm Upton Lane BMX track will be having a spruce-up. A crack team from RAF Cosford will be coming along to get rid of the litter and cut back the undergrowth. A big thank you to Phil Whittall from the Sundorne Community Church for arranging this. If you are in the area please come along and help. During half term the reccy rangers had a visit from The BIG Lottery as the project is being highlighted as good practice throughout the West Midlands Region. Our second van is about ready to hit the road. We will be providing Street Sports for 11-16 year olds and as soon as I have pictures of the van I will post it to this site.

Need to go as I’m out playing this afternoon.

look forward to your comments
